Political Discussions

A new study published today in the New England Journal of Medicine warns of a "mental health epidemic" afflicting the nation's Republican governors.

According to the study, the symptoms of the epidemic include "bizarre, uncontrollable behaviors" and "grandiose self-ideations," including an impulse to compare oneself to Biblical figures.

The study also says that the mental disorder is manifest in "erratic, incoherent" speech and a syndrome akin to Tourette "in which the patient does not appear to know when to stop talking."

      You give them that much?

And sati, notice the fact that the piece was written by a comedian. A comedian is someone who writes things that are perceived as funny. Some cartoonists are funny. Some are not.

Apparently the epidemic also affects some Republicans on boards like this: they become incapable of recognizing satire when they see it.
    1. anticsrocks
Oh there's an epidemic alright. But it lies much farther to the left...
    2. clioandme
Come on. After Sanford's and Palin's performances, you don't think Borowitz's story is even a little bit funny?
    3. anticsrocks
Yes, it's funny. I like political humor. I miss the guy who used to have the act where he did kind of a theater in the round, and a grand piano. Can't remember his name, but he was a political satirist and he made fun of, well just about everybody.

Anyone remember who I am talking about?

      Mark Russell (on PBS)?

YES! Thanks mark. I could picture him, but just couldn't place his name.

I used to watch him back in the '70s. Times have changed, though, and politics have gotten a lot uglier.

"Apparently the epidemic also affects some Republicans on boards like this: they become incapable of recognizing satire when they see it."

Oh no.. it's contageous. That occured in the libtard camp with the Cops shooting monkey cartoon and a bunch of other things as well...

      Guess it jumped the isle.

      Testify.

Sarah Palin showed on Friday that in one respect at least, she is qualified to be president.

Caribou Barbie is one nutty puppy.

Usually we don’t find that exquisite battiness in our leaders until they’ve been battered by sordid scandals like Watergate (Nixon), gnawing problems like Vietnam (L.B.J.), or scary threats like biological terrorism (Cheney).

Isn't this a stereotypical attack? You can make a distinction between personal and group if you want, but if you do that you essentially remove all morality from your proposed rule and look like a bunch of pencil-waving beaurecrats.

Further, there really isn't any substance to this satire. It's just empty, superficial and pointless, sort of like a Barack Obama speech.
    1. anticsrocks
LOL is that with or without the TOTUS? (teleprompter of the united states)
    2. satijournal
A joke about a political party or corrupt politicians is not a personal attack unless you are an authoritarian follower and you love your party more than you love your country.

Where the dogpoo did that come from?

Hey, did everyone suddenly forget what sarcasm and satire were? C'mon guys!

USA today/Gallup poll says 7 out of 10 Republicans surveyed would still vote for Sarah Palin. It just confirms what I have always suspected: that as much as the GOP touts patriotism and love of country, that they would sell out the future of our nation in the name of partisan politics in a heart beat.

    Ugh. *shudders*

Yep, they love their party more than they love their country. It's all about emotional issues: religion, gay marriage, abortion, socialism, the ideological belief that government is bad and everything should be privatized... As long as you have a flag magnet on your car, you're patriotic.
    3. Agit8r
"As long as you have a flag magnet on your car, you're patriotic."

nonsense! You have to have one or more secondary patriotic identification emblems on your car, which may include: yellow ribbon, a sticker of "Calvin" peeing on a brand emblem of a truck that you don't drive, a "Calvin" praying sticker, or your fave NASCAR driver's #...

      did I forget any?
    4. jdhayes225
I just saw a bumper sticker that had pictures of George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan in cowboy hats and it said, "My heroes have always been cowboys." Does that count?
    5. satijournal
You need a few guns in your trunk, too.
    6. Agit8r
      @jd

Despite the fact that neither were ever actual cowboys... yes, yes it does
    7. anticsrocks
Tell me, Stillthinking. What is wrong with patriotism? What is wrong with love of country? Are those concepts not in the forefront of what is considered "chic" anymore?

@sati and Agit8r...I expected as much as a partisan attack from sati, that is all he is capable of. But you Agit8r, I thought I could count on better than that from you.
    8. Agit8r
Stillthinking wasn't condemning patriotism. Just superficial patriotism.

The original American patriots were those who fought for PEOPLE against a rogue government that was trying to enslave them in a cycle of taxation/exploitation.

And how do Republicans do this?

      ...spinoff thread time.

You're complaining that a satirical thread entitled "Republican Mental Health Epidemic" has gotten partisan? lol!
    10. anticsrocks
Whatever sati. I was commenting on you and Agit8r flaming everything Repuplican. Like I said, I expect as much from you, that is about all you ever do. Bash Bush and bash the right. Got a problem with that? Show me it isn't true.

      Didn't think so.
    11. xmarks
I might have seen a different poll. It specifically asked if the respondent wanted to Palin to be a major player in national politics. That could be president. It could also be Hannity in a skirt.
    12. jeremyjanson
@ST: They think she would do a good job. There is nothing partisan about it! Call it stupid if you want, but they have no bad intentions in this regard.
    13. xmarks
The only partisian part is the divide in opinion. Republicans overwhelmingly for. Democrats overwhelmingly against.
