Scary to think that she's the new archtype.

It will depend at least in part on what conclusions the GOP draws from this election. Even if it were to win, it will just barely squeak by. A large amount of soul-searching will be necessary. What does the Republican party stand for? If they decide the GOP and its base are the same thing, then maybe Palin is their woman. If the center of American politics shifts farther away from that base, as it seems to be doing, then maybe the party will decide to shift too.
Course maybe Palin herself will see the writing on the wall and decide that the divisive message she is preaching is not going to get her where she wants to be. Maybe she'll reinvent herself. (Her biography is too short for me to see any indicators suggesting how she'll react.)
If this election changes things as radically as polls seem to be indicating, it will be interesting to see how both parties react, how they reconfigure themselves. The Republicans will probably have the luxury of letting the Democrats shoulder the burden of ownership for the messes of the past eight years, while the Republicans themselves can sit back and figure out what they stand for and how best to approach the next election. Will be a long, hard learning process for many of them. -
I think that the Republicans are going to be "out in the wild" for awhile after this election.
They are going to need to evaluate what their strategy is. What were the bases of conservatism (especially the Goldwater variety) seem to be perverted at this point. (Small government, fiscal sanity, government staying out of your family)...
Last time they were down a little they came back with a hard right approach on family values. Now it will be interesting to see what happens.-
Let me add that I want a return to a Goldwater styled Republican party. Not what we have now with the Christian right and this unbelievably perverted version of it.
I have respect for that type of Republican and I think that a real debate about policy can happen from that position. It is a good debate that leads to a stronger country... But where we are at right now is borderline fanatical. -
It will be interesting to see what happens. It might take the GOP another election cycle or two to find a footing that attracts a substantial number voters.
They've got one thing going for them right now: they'll get to focus on whatever the Democrats do wrong trying to solve the Sisyphean tasks handed to them by GOP incompetence. But I think the GOP needs a better mantra than religion is good and government is bad. I know they have different attitudes about what government's roll is, but they need to at least embrace the notion that government should try to do whatever its job is well.

Sarah Palin is not the representation of the majority of Republicans. In fact she was a terrible mistake on the part of John McCain. She represents the extreme conservative wing of the party. Basically she is the choice for the Focus on the Family types. I was a lot more comfortable with John McCain as a candidate before Sarah Palin. I think they lost a lot of the small government, stay out of our lives republicans with her as a choice.

i don't get the palin-reagan connection. mccain claims to be a reagan republican and though it's not exactly how he's running in 2008, it would have been valid for him in 2000.
it's feasible that palin could resurrect herself in 2012 as an insurgent if the mccain/palin ticket loses next week but doubtful. there'll be a lot of finger-pointing and blaming, and palin can't get away from the negatives she's begun to rack up and the drag she's obviously become on the ticket.
if obama wins in a landslide (and that's starting to seem entirely plausible), you may see the end of palin's brand of politics (religious fundamentalism + ad hominem attacks/appeals to voters) in the republican party for a while.
if the republicans do decide to go for more fundamentalism, they'd likely try mike huckabee. and he does the "sunny optimism" thing a lot better than palin or mccain. -
I sure hope she is. It'll mean the Republicans will be out of power for at least the next few elections.

Neoconservatives plan Project Sarah Palin to shape future American foreign policy
Neoconservatives whose influence had been waning in Washington have hitched their colours to rising star Sarah Palin in a bid to shape US foreign policy for another decade.
- Comments by the governor of Alaska in her first television interview, in which she said Nato may have to go to war with Russia and took a tough line on Iran's nuclear programme, were the result of two weeks of briefings by neoconservatives.
- Mrs Palin was identified as a potential future leader of the neoconservative cause in June 2007
- Her case as John McCain's running mate was advanced vociferously by William Kristol, editor of Weekly Standard
- Many believe that the "neocons", whose standard bearer in government, Vice President Dick Cheney, lost out in Washington power struggles to the more moderate defence secretary Robert Gates and secretary of state Condoleezza Rice, last year are seeking to mould Mrs Palin to renew their influence.
- Steven Clemons, of the New American Foundation think tank in Washington, a chronicler of the ebb and flow of neocon power in the White House, bemoaned the appointment, saying Mr Biegun "will turn her into an advocate of Cheneyism and Cheney's view of national-security issues."

Yeah Baby, Palin 2012. who cares if Obama wins, actually this will be great for Palin! I am so excited! Most likely the economy will go to hell even more and people will be fed up with the Dems. Repubs need to regroup and refocus and four years will be enough time. I firmly believe that an Obama win will give people food for thought. CNN, ABC and even Hollywood are starting to get Palin fever. Thanks to all you Dems who have supported Obama. I love ya! You just gave us the 2012 election. Palin/? 2012
-
Well, actually, the republican base as all but abandoned Palin. ('cept for the guys that like that hot librarian look)
Even McCain's endorsers mentioned that having Palin on the ticket made them question McCain's judgment. She's really been a drag on the campaign.
In fact, tonight I watched as she came back to rally with McCain instead of spreading out to reach as many voters as possible like they had been doing.
Just days away from election day? That's not a good sign.

Who cares about this election Anok it is over, time for us all to move on! Have fun in the next four years! See you in 2012! Whose ranting. I am just as calm as a cucumber and excited. Why are so many women jealous of this woman. Ahhh because she is not a thick legged manly feminist? Because she is smart, has a gorgeous husband a wonderful family. It seems to me that all the very successful stunning women love Palin. It is only the goobers that pan Palin. Beautiful strong women are so threatening to other women who don't have it going on, it is just awful but hey I have had to live with it. And the comment that about guys liking her because she has that hot librarian look. Well you and I live in different circles and that is not true in my circle of prominent men who are hire and promote very talented women and have deep respect for them. Men who call her a libriarian etc., don't have respect for women. Me, I personally have an endearment for strong, secure men who are not afraid of beautiful and powerful women. All I know is that she has given me hope for those beautfiul women who have got it all to suceed in the political world. God Bless!
-
I don't think it's jealousy... personally I think it's a fear that a woman such as Palin could actually woo the sweat pants wearing, baby rearing, 80's perm donning, parrots out from middle suburbia stepping away from gossiping and most likely taping "Young and the Restless", just to open their mouths and carry signs for a Woman they know nothing about other than what their husbands or church circle has told them.
Unfair... yeah I did pull out a few stereotypes, but come one. People don't like her for reasons that have nothing to do with jealousy. Educated people see beyond her pretty face. If she were unattractive we still wouldn't like her. She stands for everything that I'm against. -
Beautiful? LOL!!!
@ 210betty
I'm with ya! She is a polar opposite to the progression of science and peace. The US would be at war with Russia and Iran if this idiot were to be president.
It's people like Sarah Palin that hurts conversion to Christianity.
How Pro Life is it when you take a NINE hour plane flight to a hospital in Alaska from Texas after your water breaks??? It's selfish thinking OVER that child's welfare, on her part. -
Well, the election isn't over yet.
However - you are projecting that because she was able to be on the ticket this year, she will be eligible to run for president four years from now. My assessment is this:
The republicans are calling Palin a drag on the ticket. If McCain loses the bid - Palin will be found at fault among other problems with McCain's campaign. The RNC will not look on her favorably next time around.
abcnews.go.com/PollingUnit/Politics/Story?id=6105651&page=2
At her peak, after the Republican convention, 59 percent of likely voters held an overall favorable opinion of Palin.
Now that's down to 46 percent, while 51 percent see her unfavorably. Majority disfavor is danger for any public figure; so is its intensity -- and an unusually large 40 percent have a "strongly" unfavorable opinion of Palin.
Men now divide about evenly on Palin, 51-46 percent favorable-unfavorable, down from 59-24 percent Sept. 7. Women, though, have gone from 58-33 percent then to 41-56 percent now, currently viewing her unfavorably by a 15-point margin.

I think that Lawgirl0008 is not real at all and a blow hard. She is here just to cause problems. Anyone that would stand behind a woman like Palin has issues.
I am sorry but Palin has no substance and ONLY speaks to a extreme kind of soccer mom or joe the plumber. She does not speak for any of my friends or republicans that I know (I live in Texas and there are some solid republicans here). Palin.......to a lot of women is an embarrassment.
If republicans are going to run on Abortion, guns, and religion again, it is not going to work.-
wow and this is coming from someone has a motivational blog. I thought you were serious when you asked me why I thought she would make a good Prez. I am very disappointed. There is so many nasty things being said and much being directed toward me and my views. I am entitled to how I feel. Just like you all are. This is supposed to be a discussion board. But allI have seen is such mean spirited people who just attack if you don't agree with my views. I guess this is not a place for such a blowhard like me! Good luck to you all. And maybe sometime in your sorry pitiful lives you can open up and have a normal discussion. You are certainly allowed to disagree with me but calling me a blowhard and someone who wants to casue trouble is just the exact problem we have here in America. I f eel very sorry for you all! YOu must have such a sad life. At least I have a happy life and at least I have the balls to come into a discussion board where I am the minority and face all this abuse. But truthfully it is not worth it. Good luck to you all and I hope you get all that you wish for. Robin

Well let me start off by saying I am sorry for being rude... I should have not called you a blowhard.
With that said, I don't agree with Palin or her views.
This has nothing to do with her being a woman but everything to do with her not speaking for me or to me as a black male. The republican party from what I can see is not diverse at all and does not mirror the diversity I strive for and I want my daughter to experience.
I could care less about the issue of abortion.... that is a womans choice and should not be outlawed. At the end of the day a woman will have to answer for the abortion with the creator.
Talk about socialism, taking money from oil companies and giving it to the citizens is socialism anyway you cut, but that is ok to supporters of Palin. That is taking from the rich and giving to the poor.
I love the fact that she is in the race. I am happy to see all minorities playing a larger role in politics and society in general.
She has potential, but demeaning Obama for pallin' around with terrorist when her husband belonged to AIP and McCain has ties with G. Gordon Liddy..... I mean come on!
I am tired of the hypocrisy of republicans. Our country is safe and will be safe, sharing pictures of Iraq, exploding bombs and 9/11 to strike fear in the hearts of American's is as sick of a propaganda piece you can run.
It takes more than having a good looking husband, 5 kids and being able to see Russia from your backyard to run a country. I understand when women see her they want the Fairy tale of Palin, the husband, the power, the legs, the white picket fence....... but it is that a fairy tale.

You guys gave me a good laugh. Nice volley.
I know women who adore Palin because they are anti-abortion/one issue thinkers. And it is exciting to see a woman get that high up on a ticket.
Having said that, no way is Palin a librarian:-) She wants to ban books--tried to do just that as an elected official, sworn to uphold the laws of this country. How AMERICAN is that? A vice/president who doesn't believe in freedom of speech or press? What might she ban from your blog?
Okay, so maybe I shouldn't get all uptight over one issue. So here's another. How out of touch do you have to be to take one of the rarest opportunities you may ever get to be on a platform with millions listening and you choose to talk about your earrings in the midst of an economic crisis?
But maybe I'm too harsh. White people in rural areas have a good excuse for being out of touch with the world and the rest of the US. It is not me, but their own Republican party speech writer who referred to them as the "rump of America" and said they have ruined the party (this week).
My bottom line?Iwas not an O'Bama supporter until Palin arrived on the scene. Now I'd vote for a goat rather than give her a path to the White House. Palin could not govern a city, let alone a nation. I had more items on the agenda for my HOA meeting than she has ever had for a meeting to govern her state or as mayor (go look, it's public record). I also have more residents in my HOA than she did the city of which she was mayor. Not qualifications to govern in a post-modern society. But she's welcome on the board of my HOA!
It is sad to see this issue turn us against 1 another. The wealth of the middle class has been residtributed to the top 1% & children do not have the education to compete for jobs. If you don't believe me, read a few US blogs. I want to stop being meanspirited and start making something positive now...
How do we stop being divisive and start coming together? Can we ask questions that generate solutions, new ideas and stop the fear? I'm tired of turning away from my fellow countrymen in disgust. Let's discuss how we overcome the disasters of greed and elitism.

that is so annoying! damn that edit key.
i don't see much point in trying to be reasonable with folks who are so weirdly competitive that they have to now insist that obama's winning is exactly what they want.
politics is just a game for them. they have picked their team and winning (one way or the other) is the only thing that counts.
they can never admit defeat. they can never admit they're wrong.
about anything. ever.

Palin's future causes Republican rift
In one corner are some conservatives who believe the Alaska governor has been a detriment to John McCain's presidential bid and threatens to lead the party astray for the foreseeable future.
Another faction says Palin's core-conservative beliefs, demonstrated political acumen, and compelling frontier biography position her to reshape the face of a party now viewed by many voters as out of touch.
www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/10/29/palin.gop/index.html
I think the Republican party will need to move towards the center and away from people like Palin if they want to move forward. The fact that John McCain got the nomination demonstrated that Republican voters are interested in moving in this direction. Unfortunately McCain sold his soul to the religious right and the neocons shortly after accepting the nomination and it's been downhill ever since.-
I think he had a much better shot early on, but then he caved to the extreme right. Picking a female V.P. was a very clever move, but then we all found out who she really was so it didn't work out. Now she's sabotaging him for her own benefit, but I don't think her future presidential run is a good bet.
The Republicans need to regroup and set a course. A real change is what they need and I don't see that in Palin. -
I agree - but I'm wondering just how much political weight does that extreme actually have?
I mean, you would think it has a lot - seeing as how many candidates pander to them - but on the flip side, it's alienated so many other voters out there...
I'm thinking out loud here - perhaps in the past, with higher rates of voter apathy, the far right was very powerful - but when you have so many voters coming out, they lose their edge to the massive groups that are moderate.
And/or, maybe people just got tired of voting for candidates that pander to the extreme sides, and made a stand?
-
Interesting...... well at the rate they packaged and market their candidates it is not a surprise if indeed she gets nominated as the standard bearer for the Republicans with perhaps Joe the Plumber as her side kicked err running mate. She can then bring in her husbands secessionist Alaskans into the fold and we might just witness the most hilarious political entertainment of "historic proportion" in the making..... lol.
-
All good points. It is thankful that they did NOT win.
So what is the future of the republican Party?
Here are some thoughts....

Here's an article that looks at Palin's options: www.politico.com/news/stories/1108/15313.html
-
I guess people have a problem with a woman who stands for small government, lower taxes, and more power to the states. That is why she is so popular among actual conservatives and why Reagan did so very well.
-
Did you selectively leave out the social issues she stands against? One big problem people have is that she's a woman who quite possibly stands for policies which would set us back with regard to social equality. She's a religious nut preparing for the end of days scenario and that is very off-putting for people who have other plans. Her RNC speech stood on a hate based platform accentuated by lies and fear. She's severely lacking in the smarts department on top of all that, so executive experience means absolutely squat when the brains behind it are not functioning up to par.
The real message you need to receive, theboyjlowe, is that the Republican party can be divided up into the folks that believe the things you listed and the Christian Right. One is hurting the other. One wants smaller government and the other wants to use government to dictate what is socially acceptable. That's the point of this thread. The Republican party is going to have to grow some balls and decide what they want to do at this point. If Palin is the face of the party, they are in trouble. Put people in charge who have an education and the party will find success. Put idiots in charge and you'll have to call another plumber to fish out the party that has been flushed down the toilet.
