NOT!

Obama's second presidential appointment is Rahm Emanuel. For all the naysayers who prophetized that if Obama was elected, that would mean the end of Israel, a little background on Emanuel:

Emanual is Jewish, but more importantly, his father fought (in what was Palestine) for the creation of an independent Jewish state as a member of the Irgun -- the resistance group that forced England out. He is now Obama's Chief of Staff.

So much for that right-wing talking point.

Appointing him means nothing. What Obama will do to maintain relations with Israel is still to be seen.

The current chief of staff used to be the Director for the Office of Management and Budget.. Do you think that the government is well managed and the budget in great shape too?

That must make Joe the Plumber's face so red right now...

Just to add to the discussion, this statement from the Bush administration today.

Rice: Mideast peace by year-end no longer possible
    www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/11/06/AR2008110600358.ht...

The statement I found most interesting from the article was this,

"We do not think it is likely it will happen before the end of the year," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said in Washington, while Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice acknowledged as much at the outset of a Mideast trip meant to secure the modest gains from a year of U.S.-sponsored talks between Israel and one part of the fractured Palestinian leadership.

Perino said U.S. advisers began to doubt the deadline months ago, as a corruption scandal and related political uncertainties occupied Israel's attention.

... so maybe conditions in *Israel* might have something to do with the Middle-East Peace process?? Fascinating.

    Amazing.

you are actually so hooked on obama that you think appointing a person is going to be enough to ensure an entire presidencies relationships with a country?

    Wow..

While I agree that Israel might see this as a positive sign, it is important to remember that we are talking about the White House Chief of Staff here, not an Undersecretary of State or something.

That's true, but it's an indication that he's more pro-Israel than people give him credit for. After all, Chicago has a huge Jewish population and they participated in propelling him to the presidency.
    2. csiunatc
Naturally it is a positive. It does not however say anything about his political stance towards Israel as a country. I'm guessing that this appointment had little to do with Israel and more to do with picking people who have been around the block to compensate for his lack of experience.

I think it is a sign of things to come. More "Chicago Style Politics" cronies
    4. satijournal
You can say what you want about his experience, but he does have an aptitude for picking good people, and that's one of the most important duties of the president -- delegating authority.

As much as I disagree with Obama, I never really worried that he would change America's relationship with Israel. Which is certainly a good thing.

I think something is going to happen fairly soon into Obama's candidacy regarding Israel and Palestine, something which may settle this once and for all.

Cronyism has never been so prevalent as it was in the Bush White House, so I don't think he can do any worse.

Sorry the man is a stealth bomber he will do fine.

Interesting, I was just listening to a panel discussion on Democracy Now, in which several speakers said that Obama was probably even more pro-Israel than we thought. And they looked to his appointment of Rahm Emmanuel as evidence of that.

Of course, if this means that the U.S. policy towards Israel will be "more of the same," then that's not good for Israel in the long run. Because the situation of Israel-Palestine as it is now, is unsustainable. Something's got to give, too many are living in untenable and oppressive conditions.

Jan, do you even know what is going on over there? It is in the Hamas charter to destroy Israel. Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East, EVERY, I repeat EVERY citizen has a right to vote, as equal access to health care, pays the same tuition to attend their universities and technical schools, REGARDLESS of whether they are Arab or Jewish. Iran denies the Holocaust and has called Israel a "stinking corpse" and has threatened on numerous occasions to wipe Israel off the map. If anything remains the same, it has to be, and will be the United States relationship with Israel.
    2. jan4insight
Do you even know how many Palestinians, particularly in Gaza, are suffering because of Israel's oppressive policies?

Look, I do not wish to get into this debate. I was merely reporting a piece of opinion I heard from other observers on a news program I listen to with some regularlity. Take it up with those experts.

      NewBlogger2008,

Israel is an apartheid state, it shouldn't surprise anyone that many want to see it fall. For the most part, Israel's problems are Israel's fault. It was the Zionist movement that introduce terrorism to the middle east and the first thing they did after it was founded was a massive "relocation" campaign to get all the Palestinians out of Israel. Then they turned around and claimed that Israel was a "land without people, for a people without a land." That's what the "right of return" is all about -- these people want their homes back.

If Israel wants to drop the apartheid scheme, then good on them. But until then, calling it a democracy is an abuse of the English language.
    4. clioandme
Seems to be some excessive rhetoric on both sides of your debate here.
    5. satijournal
The anti-Israel crowd is as bad as the anti-Obama crowd. Their arguments are based on misinformation.

According to the G-d of Israel Himself, Israel will never be destroyed! A remnant of His chosen will not only survive but see their Messiah face to face too!

Israel's deliverer is indeed coming and, He will NOT be in the form of mere men, ride upon peace treaties and boundaries or use weapons of warfare - but, He will rule with a Rod of Iron.

According to Gawd, a bat is a bird. I say we don't put to much credit in the old guy. He's getting kind of goofy in his old age.
