    Lovely,

Wonder what all the people who talked about "there wont be any "pro-Obama" racism" are now?
  2. NewBlogger2008
I wonder what the hard-core "only Republican's commit voter intimidation" people will say. Because I have a feeling that these two Black Panther guys are not voting for McCain.
    1. MadameX
"But why would people in the GOP be spinning this?"

Because the GOP has been caught in so many efforts to prevent people from voting recently that it's something for them to grasp at and yell, "See, the other side does it, too!" In fact, someone in this thread has already more or less said that.
  3. clioandme
Those two idiots are clueless. But why would people in the GOP be spinning this? I'm not saying you're spinning it, MonkeySuit. I'm saying it's happening out there. Politico offers some interesting comments that relate to the spin and election-day politicking.
    www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/1108/Poll_problems_and_poll_problem_spin.ht...

And why only this one story on BC so far? Maybe we could call that good news?
    1. csiunatc
      Why "good news" ??

Oh. I forgot. Because its pro obama of course.

      Never mind.
    2. clioandme
The good news being that, so far, at 4:30 p.m. EST, we are not being flooded with this kind of story.
  4. monkeysuit
This shouldn't be taking place anywhere on either side it puts a black eye on the process.
    1. clioandme
Certainly. On the positive side, the police reacted quickly. As Politico suggests, we'll probably get the full story from the Philly press tomorrow.

(By the way, who the heck was there to suppress in heavily Democratic Philly?)
    2. monkeysuit
I don't see how the full story will be any different the guy had a night stick its on camera, unless the republicans hired them, haaaa.

Exactly they don't even need to be there but its still no excuse.
    3. clioandme
Details we don't get from the video footage include who these people were, what they claim they were doing, how long they were standing there for, how long it took the police to react, what happened to them, what part of Philly that was, and whether they, in fact, prevented anyone from voting.
    1. clioandme
"Resolved" meaning? There are still a lot of unknowns here. Dunno if it will merit further reporting, but given the spin that Drudge et. al. are offering, I imagine it does.
  5. Anok
The guys standing out front like that are certainly intimidating - but they haven't done anything illegal, either. Standing around looking scary isn't a crime. Was there any reports of actual intimidation, abuses, or illegal acts?

By the way if you go to the actual youtube video and read the comments I found that to be far more disturbing than the two men standing outside with a nightstick.
    1. NewBlogger2008
Anok, standing in front of a polling station in an intimidating manner that makes voters worried about voicing their opinions worry for their safety is voter intimidation and is illegal.
    2. clioandme
Yeah, that kind of loitering could not be legal.
    3. RenalFailure
And the police came and took that guy away. Problem solved.

Hell, I would have loved to see a baton-wielding black panther at my polling place. I could have asked him if he used to be one of the S1W's from Public Enemy. Would have made waiting in line a whole lot more fun.
    4. Anok
That depends on the laws for that district/state.

We have "loiterers" in front of out polls all day long here - as long as they are a specific number of feet away from the door, it's legal. And some of them can be really intimidating.

And who are they trying to intimidate? I saw people walking back and forth behind them in the video...in and out of the polling place. If they're supposed to be there to drum up votes for Obama, as intimated, why would they stand there and scare voters away? Makes no sense.

From the article posted by Renal, these guys have no affiliation with the Black Panthers, and were literally a couple of yahoos who were escorted off the property without arrest.

    for christ's sake!
blacks make up 13 percent of the american population!
get real. they are not going to be intimidating anybody anywhere.
when there are a bunch of stories about blacks going into white neighborhoods and challenging/removing whites from the rolls then you'll have something.
pardon me if i don't hold my breath waiting on that.
    1. loverofjazz
well, obama won it. guess there must have been a lot of those black panthers forcing people to vote "socialist" eh? haha.
    2. monkeysuit
Thats not what I was saying at all. It could have been anybody it happened to be people who claim to be a part of the black panthers dont try that racist garbage with me.
  7. cooper
First off all, it is a predominantly black precinct which went %95 percent Kerry in 2004, there is no evidence it was a Black Panther though politico has pulled up a picture of who one of the guys look like and that guy is no friend of Obama.http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/1108/Panther_vs_Obama.html Pretty poor journlaism to guess though - really bad journalism.

The guy was not escorted away by the police he left on his own, the guy who was hired as a poll guard did not leave. The night club was a bad idea but from what I can see their intent was good.

There was a poll worker there from the Obama campaign who said there was no intimidation going on it the video link at the bottom appeared a pip squeAK camera man wanted to make something happen.

    www.eyeblast.tv/public/video.aspx?v=e46UZuSUSU

With all the potential screw upS and voter suppression reports coming out of Florida, Virginia and Ohio this is not a story at all.

I've been driving the elderly to the polls all day so I'm a little out of patience.

    LOL

That's the politico link. For some reason I can't edit the post.
    1. Anok
The article has moved or deleted.....

      That's weird.
    2. cooper
      yea sorry.

Also in case you haven't been following it I just saw a note in the comments at TPM that
"Fox did an update on the story, and essentially called BS on the whole intimidation thing. Guess they realized they were about to make a non-event into one and regained some sanity"
    3. GallFire
Erm, from what I saw the reporters were very clear in stating (at Fox) that there was no sign that any actual intimidation had occurred or that anyone had not voted because of the men.
All they reported were the two guys there, one with a nightstick, and someone had called the police on them.

RevoltingSpawn: can you provide a link to where it was reported they were not Black Panthers?
  9. revoltingpawn
I failed to see any voter intimidation in the video...

Bad idea for someone to stand around with a night stick in front of a polling place and it appears from the links supplied that the situation was brought under control.

It was reported that the men are not part of the Black Panther Party but of course FOX News had their own spin.

By the way, the organization that exists now by that name is called the New Black Panther Party and is not connected to the original group which does not exist any more.

ideasandrevolution.net - If you're not outraged you're not reading this blog
    1. cooper
exactly even FOX has now admitted that.
  10. cooper
It's pretty obvious that in a precinct such as that the guards were most likely there to protect people from voter suppression efforts thatn the other way around.

I also would like to have a link that says that guy was a member of the New Black Panthers. Not that I doubt it but I haven't seen it really confirmed.
    1. monkeysuit
Right you guys think what you want the man had a night stick and why would they need security?
    2. clioandme
Okay, but just who was the guy intimidating? According to this story, he doesn't approve of *any* of the candidates, and the voters visiting there were black. Yet McCain and Drudge and Co. were using this as a story to smear Democrats with. So yes, intimidating, but what kind of intimidation?
    3. RenalFailure
The New Black Panthers? Is that like The New Hollywood Squares with Jon Davidson and Shadoe Stevens and Joan Rivers in the Center Square? Decent, but not as good as the original with Peter Marshall and Paul Lynde.
    4. anticsrocks
Well, if they had decided to carry Nerf Balls they could have been the Black Panther Lite...
  11. cooper
A lot of inner city polling places have security, some not so inner city as well.

No one disputed the night stick was a good idea. The dispute comes from the fact the precinct in blue almost totally so it certainly wasn't to intimidate voters.
  12. monkeysuit
Congrats Senator Obama the new President of the USA!!!!
  13. monkeysuit
@ mark there was a white man who was talked to by the news media who claimed they said things to him but it doesn't matter now.
  14. Agit8r
Thank heavens we have mail-in elections here in WA
    1. monkeysuit
      A little late.
