When someone says they are "Progressive," what does that mean? To me, progress means movement toward greater equality before the law. A greater freedom from arbitrary power over the individual. A movement that delegates governance OF the individual--to the greatest degree practicable--TO the individual.

Others percieve progress as a move toward not only equality before the law, but ABSOLUTE equality, of means rather than opportunity. The belief that liberty is what the individual is restrained from, rather than what is restrained from the individual.

I'm wondering which sort of progress other bloggers out there agree with (or if there are other definitions out there?) and which you think the self described "progressive" who holds the highest public service position in our nation believes in.

To me, "progressive" means just that - someone who wants and fights for social progress. Hopefully in the right direction. Social progress, to me, means equality in life, quality of life, and access to resources on an equal playing field.

Obama, to me, seems like a progressive who fits that, but we'll see.
