I grew up in India in a middle sized family to finally immigrate to the United States and pursue my lifetime dream of nursing.

As a young girl growing up in New Delhi life was not always easy for Faran Latafat. The oldest of four children, her responsibilities in sharing the work of caring for her younger siblings and daily chores left little time for fun. Faran Latafat parents owned a small retail shop and worked long hours to give their children all they could. Although money was not always abundant both parents insisted on the children achieving the highest level of education possible. Faran grew up understanding that education was power but that this power had to be used to help those that could not help themselves. School came easily for Faran and she excelled in every subject with her greatest interest being anything to do with medicine and caring for others.

Running the family business and making sure the children kept up with their schoolwork left little time for much else. Still, Faran’s parents insisted that each child find a way to “give back” and help others who were not as fortunate as they were. Faran Latafat became involved in a local program that helped children who were seriously ill and not able to attend a regular classroom to keep up with their schoolwork. Her heart immediately went out to these children and she often went beyond her expected duties saving what little money she could to buy her new “friends” a much wanted box of crayons or bringing them sweet treats from home. She knew then that helping others less fortunate was her calling. In high school Faran Latafat participated in any project that was designed to help the underprivileged. This passion would follow her throughout her career.

It became very clear to all of Faran Latafat teachers at the National High School in New Delhi that pursuing a nursing degree was a goal that she would not back down from. As a straight A student both her parents and the school believed that her best opportunities would come from applying to Colleges in North America. In her final year of high school the search was on to find an appropriate institution that would give Faran the education she deserved. Although they were elated about their daughter’s future prospects this caused great stress for Faran Latafat parents. Even if they managed to find a College for their eldest child, there would not be enough left to provide the other children who were proving to be equally proficient in school, with such an opportunity.

After months of trying to find a solution that would benefit all the children, a close family friend arrived with what seemed to be the perfect answer. This friend it seemed had a distant cousin who was an American Citizen living in Washington, DC. Calls were already made and Airavata who owned a small printing company in Washington would be delighted to sponsor Faran Latafat entire family to America if they were willing to make the move. After much deliberation it was decided that Faran’s parents wanted more than anything for all their children to have the best possible opportunities in life and if that meant leaving a lifetime of family and friends, that is what they would do. The whole family became very excited about the upcoming move and went about the business of selling their modest home and business. Everything was to be sold except for their clothes as Airavata; a man they had never met, offered them a small furnished three-bedroom apartment rent free for their first year in America. In preparation the whole family made a resolution to speak only English every night after dinner in order to improve their speaking skills. The sale of all their possessions left enough money for what they hoped would get them through until Faran’s parents could earn enough to support themselves.

It’s Bulb Buying Season- Spring blooming bulbs have started popping up in the garden centers. Funny how these nondescript blobs hold such appeal. For most of us, it’s a little early to think about planting them. But for the best selection, it’s not too early to plan.
