At the age of 18 I ran away from small-town life to the bright lights of the big city. Twenty years later, I ran away again, from the big city to the tiniest village I could find. The medieval granite village of Carmine Superiore, overlooking Italy's stunning Lago Maggiore. Six years, one husband, one ancient stone house, two trilingual children, three cats, 24+ chickens and a flightless seagull later - and I'm telling the (only-slightly-embroidered) day-to-day story of life for a mother-over-40 on The Rock (no cars allowed).
