Mainstream, suburban mom on the outside.
Smart-ass, music freak on the inside,
Born in California and raised in Miami, I’ve been moving around like a gypsy with a bounty on my head ever since. Now, I’m settled in a Pleasantville-inspired, lil’ town just outside of Washington DC, with manicured lawns and more moms with names ending in “ie” than I can stomach. I live with my incredibly patient husband and my two outrageously funny and gifted (of course) girls – nicknamed here as “Sweet Pea” and “Drama Queen” – who rebel against their mother by playing Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez on their stereos. Why can’t they rebel like other typical American kids and get drunk off my scotch and sneak off with their gomer boyfriends in the middle of the night?
In my former life, I was a radio DJ in Miami, where I succumbed to an array of influences, from goth complaint rock to pissed off industrial slam music. I never did and never will play anything by Gloria Estefan. I spun for years and miss it like a phantom limb, but have found another calling as a mental health professional. I’ve been working as a therapist for the last five years while I earn my graduate degree, and I love, love, love it. So much so, that I offer free advice right here in my corner of the blogosphere. Plus you get the added bonus of a music mix to match your miseries. Where was something like this when I was coming up, huh? HUH?
While I have an unhealthy obsession for accumulating music knowledge and a varied palette of things I listen to on any given day, what’s rocking my world these days are:
The Shins, The Whitest Boy Alive, The Starseeds, Psapp, Death Cab for Cutie, Laura Veirs,
Zero 7, Ramona the Pest, and Electric Owls.
But it changes as frequently as my day-of-the-week panties, so embrace some Chaos Theory and visit often.
