"The foundation of morality is to ... give up pretending to believe that for which there is no evidence, and repeating unintelligible propositions about things beyond the possibilities of knowledge." T.H. Huxley "Why believe something with insufficient evidence?" In order for the human animal to live most effectively into the future, it must understand its biological and cultural development in its earthly and universal environment. This undertaking, though vast, must come about by the systematic exploration of everything available to us - from moss to the space shuttle, from cave painting to high concept film. Additionally, given that I am a U.S. citizen and a teacher, this provides us with the beneficial side effect of providing us with better tools for effective citizenship in a democratic republic.
To our grave misfortune, the world is being gripped more and more by the terror of theocratic thinking and action. Therefore, I devote my free time to the study and exercise of reason, learning about history and the best ways to defend and promote freedom. As it turns out, the liberal education is the best way to do that. All people need to learn about the human condition - past and present. All of my reading, writing, learning, doing, and living lead me to believe that we live in a world with no gods in it and that we human beings must make the best of the circumstances we have.
