After immigrating to the USA from Russia in 1980, I worked as a professor of mathematics at Northeastern University in Boston. Then I became a researcher, trader, and most recently a hedge fund manager on Wall Street. I received a Ph.D. in mathematics from M.I.T. in 1981. I am married, have four children, and live in Greenwich, CT.
I wrote Publicani because I was concerned that the U.S. was moving in the wrong direction, and I decided to write a novel analyzing to what degree the government should be allowed to take forcefully from an individual something that he owns and share it with others.
