Refugees United was founded in 2005 as a tool to help refugees reconnect with missing family and friends in an anonymous way. It began after the founders helped a young afghan refugee trace his family from Kabul to Pakistan and to Russia. Realizing the immense difficulties a search entailed through the traditional ways of seeking, the secured database was established.

Most importantly, the database provides refugees with the all-important possibility to register anonymously. By allowing people to register with nicknames, scars, birth marks, pet names etc. coupled with a region, village and so forth, a selective anonymity is offered where only family and close friends will be able to recognize a profile. Refugees never have to disclose sensitive data, actual location or otherwise guarded information. The system does not record IP addresses, does not keep log files and our closed circuit message system allow refugees to safely verify if indeed it is family or friends they are in contact with, before revealing anything. This is done through a series of questions and verification factors.

Working through the years, Refugees United has been creating the necessary networks to reach out into the sphere of refugees and collaborating with a host of other NGO's and institutions. Presently, the search engine has been disabled due to a major overhaul. The new search engine will handle 20+ languages from the onset, providing refugees the needed possibility to search for missing loved ones in the safety of their own environment and in their native language. The new search engine will be back up and running in app. 10-14 days.

Trust is everything. And the fragile trust of refugees is something to hold dear and to protect. They have been hurt enough as it is. It is a long and hard road to gain the trust of someone who has been let down all his or her life. It is something to treat with the utmost respect and carefulness.

The service at Refugees United for refugees is of course free of charge and will always remain so. It is open to all refugees, regardless of conflict, religion, politics or any other matter.
