During the very hot summer of 1999, after many years playing rockabilly, I was listening to George Strait..s “One Night at a Time” with Marcelo Morcego. We went to a fast food restaurant at Lopes Trovao (a street in the city of Niteroi). The night was slowly growing clearer and time went by as we drank delicious long necks, when we decided to form a band called Rioclaro. There was no way to deny it: the music we brought upon us – it didn’t mater where they came from – led us to play country music. That was exactly how we felt. We were discovering artists like Dwight Yoakam, Alan Jackson and Junior Brown. Then we began to believe that Tiao Carreiro..s guitar should be revered like Chuck Berry’s guitar. So we convinced the guys from the former band (Cadillac 55) and a harmonica blues player Eduardo Camacho to face the project. We showed them that our experience in other musical styles would be necessary to reach a brand new sound of a very different country music band. John Fante and Bucowski..s books gave me inspiration to write our songs. Besides our own songs, Rioclaro..s performance is full of country music classic songs and the good old authentic rock and roll, as if we were on a long dusty road as the sunset goes by, going from town to town, sliding on wild guitars and harmonica solos, steel guitar and fiddle… This way we kept riding, singing and playing throughout this naked land, seeing the horizons of the coast, crossing through the cold of the mountains, passing through dashes of “restinga” (typical vegetation) of the splendid city of Cabo Frio, contemplating the shining moon of Minas Gerais, the cane fields and the typical smell of sugar plants of the inner state of Rio de Janeiro. We went from one place to another – now heading to the beauties of the middle west desertic sights, arriving with our music, our unexpected pleasure and still believing that living intensely is the only true philosophy.
