The New Student (paraphrased)

A young student traveled on foot for many weeks to learn from a renowned master. He arrived at last, exhausted and famished.

So the monks fed him and set him up to rest. Assuring him that he could get on with his studies immediately in the morning.

Morning came and the student, awake with the crack of dawn and eager to learn, quickly had breakfast and went down to the master to begin his studies.

He asked the master, "where would you have me start. What should I meditate upon and for how long?"

The master, without looking up asked him "have you eaten?"

"Yes, thank you," the student replied.

"Wash your bowl," the master dismissed the young student without another word.
