Spas are here to stay, and they are moving more and more in the direction of wellness. We want our spas to embody the healing lifestyle, and I hope we can learn—and teach each other about—that here.
When I covered spas professionally, I began to realize that many individuals within the industry are not so deeply immersed, or very well versed, in wellness practices as I would have liked the people to whom I’d be handing over my body to be. What was missing was a continuum of service.
Though they may have had the art down—beautiful ambience, the right-smelling fragrances and products, soothing music—it often felt like image over substance.
Other times, what happened in the treatment room may have been well and good but “on the outside” the staff was less than enlightened. Knowledge is power. We can make our spas what we want them to be.
Quick facts:
I am a print journalist. I used to be the health and wellness editor, AKA Chill Out, for the Chicago edition of Time Out magazine. I write about food, travel, lifestyle and fashion and design, often from a health and wellness-related POV.
I also write the occasional film or video script, and in 2002 completed my film documentary film, called "Baking Bread."
