Lara Aucamp became involved with the LGBTI community in 2006 as secretary for the Lesbigay Student Society at the University of Stellenbosch. In 2007 she became chairperson of Lesbigay and a member of the Cape Town Pride Committee. In 2008 she became Deputy Festival Director for Cape Town Pride. In 2008 she also launched the social group called Cape Town Lesbians, which is aimed at promoting and growing Cape Town's Lesbian community via lesbian events and a lesbian blog.
