An 8th grade assignment enlightened me to my life's passion, stock-picking. By the age of 16, I was buying stocks, and by 18, I was the president of a 40 member investment club.
I became VP of the Finance Club while earning my business undergrad from Temple University. After earning an MBA from the Katz Graduate School of Business, at the University of Pittsburgh, I made my way to Wall Street.
I worked as a senior sell-side analyst over a seven-year period at Standard & Poor's. After spending the first two years of my career following diversified financial services firms, I earned promotion into a special role as an idea generator, supporting the portfolios of institutional clients as well as driving performance within S&P's recommended lists and portfolios. I followed a group of 30-40 Small and Mid-Cap firms, and was charged with finding new buy and sell candidates. I also authored IPO research and wrote for S&P newsletters, The Outlook, Equity Insights and Emerging Opportunities, as well as for BusinessWeek Online. I also edited the work of our international analysts.
Shutting the lights out every night, while my bosses and all but a handful of hard working peers clocked time card 9 to 5 days, I generated a 23% average annual return over five years on my "Strong Buy" recommendations, and 26% over three years ended 2004. I was ranked internally as the best "strong buy" stock-picker among a group of 60 U.S. analysts over the final four years of my time with S&P. I'm a hard working guy from a blue collar background, and am widely considered a nice person as well. I work so hard because stock selection and portfolio management are my life's passion, not just a job. I am currently building my own financial advisory business and invite you to sample my research. Even if you never follow my advice, I think you will find my colorful and prescient articles interesting reading.
