Professionally, Maria has earned her B.A from Oregon State University and completed her masters in Urban Studies and Planning (M.U.S.) in 2006 from Portland State University. She has worked for several years within the social service and educational arenas targeting families and children, runaway and street youth, community/state grant programs and research firms. She received a Student Research grant through NW Health Foundation in Portland, OR from which MLWT was born.
Personally, she has been diagnosed with and manages her lupus nephritis, is currently living successfully with Stage Four Kidney Disease and occasionally raynaud's syndrome. She believes that it is up to her to be responsible for creating her life with lupus on her terms by developing a strong and diverse social network of others, building personal and community support resources, advocating for lupus awareness and to celebrate, enjoy and learn from the incredible lives of those she meets along the way.
