My name is Jay Kilby, and I am the creator and owner of a new website called WeBuyItGreen. The primary purpose of WeBuyItGreen is to promote green and fair trade businesses, products, and green living. All advertising on the site is free and will remain that way at least until it is clear that the site is generating a great deal of traffic for our businesses. They are private companies, but create a public good that we all share.
This site will serve educational and quality control functions as well. There are thousands of new green products appearing everyday, but how do we determine whether these products are actually beneficial to the environment? One source of assurance is certification from a reputable program such as LEED or EnergyStar. However, there are many businesses and products that are not covered by such programs, and we cannot expect that certification programs will keep pace with the broad array of green products hitting the market. This is where I believe a green forum for advertising can make an important contribution to a greener world. When businesses place their ads on a forum, people have an opportunity to respond. Consumers can ask businesses using the green label to explain the benefits of their products and substantiate their claims. As in the Wikipedia model, many watching eyes can contribute to quality control as well as a more educated consumer.
In short, the purpose of WeBuyItGreen is to promote a sustainable environment through responsible green businesses that are held accountable by a public forum in which we educate one another about green products and services. I hope you will join us in an effort that serves us all.
