Lauren Minchen, Managing Editor
“Wellness encompasses a healthy body, a sound mind, and a tranquil spirit. Enjoy the journey as you strive for wellness.” ~ Laurette Gagnon Beaulieu
Hey there, HMM readers! I am thrilled to be introducing myself as the managing editor of Healthy Moms Magazine! I have loved being a part of the HMM community these past years, and something I particularly love about this magazine is the wholistic approach to health and wellness: mind, body and spirit. This approach is one I weave into my nutrition work with patients, into my writing, and into my own diet and exercise habits. We often reduce the concept of health to our physical bodies: how thin we are, how much weight we’ve lost since giving birth, how many calories we eat, how many times we exercise per week, etc. But, many people forget that health is best achieved wholly: mind, body and spirit. While the health of our physical bodies is important, we must not neglect our minds and our hearts along the way. And I love that the featured content on Healthy Moms Magazine encourages us to engage every part of ourselves on the quest for wellness.
A little about me: I have been practicing as a Registered Dietitian for the past 5 years and as a nutritionist for the past seven. I manage a private practice in New York City, Lauren Minchen Nutrition, and I recently launched a whole food protein bar, Golda Bar. I specialize in nutrition counseling for digestive conditions, autoimmune diseases, food intolerances and allergies, eating disorders, pre- and post-natal nutrition, Gestational Diabetes, weight management and optimizing health through nutrition. My one mantra? There is no one-diet-fits-all answer. Everyone needs a different approach or plan that meets their unique needs and is sustainable for them.
I developed Golda Bar after years of not being able to find a healthy bar that I truly felt good about recommending to my patients. Everything I tried either contained poor quality protein, double digit sugar grams, artificial sweeteners, and/or numerous chemicals and additives. Finally, I decided I was going to create something myself! Enter Golda Bar. Each bar is non-GMO, whole food-based, gluten free, low in sugar, and full of organic ingredients. I launched in 2016, successfully funded a Kickstarter campaign to get us up and running, and have been selling on our website and in local stores ever since. It’s been a journey, and there is still lots to learn!
On the personal front, I am married to my husband of almost 10 years, Nathan. He’s a math guy. You know the guys who solve 3-page math problems? Yeah, that’s him. He’s smart, funny, and a blessing in my life. We’ve lived in NYC for about 8 years, and we love it. I love the people, the pace, the opportunity, and the energy–there’s just something about the beat of this place. We plan to stay and raise a family here, and some people call us crazy. I’m OK with that.
Now, enough about me! As managing editor, I’m looking forward to getting to know all of YOU: the members, followers, readers and contributors who make this magazine what it is. Thank you to Cascia Talbert for extending the opportunity to me. I’m excited for the year ahead. Here’s to continuing to support each other in good health and enjoying the journey along the way!
