When it comes to lilies, I like mine rare.

This beauty is called 'Eye Liner', a tribute to the fine edging on each petal, carefully pencilled in delineations enhancing her already beautiful soul.

Those lines?

In the lily world, they're rare. Odd. As in, it doesn't happen very often. It's rather like finding a genuine Van Gogh hidden among student knock-offs of the Mona Lisa.

And the very rarity adds to the glory, the value, the enjoyment of her presence in my garden. It adds considerably to the price tag, the cost of acquisition. Limited availability adds to the mystique and desirability of the more uncommon species to an avid collector.

When it comes to people, God likes His rare.

We are all designed in His image in general terms - but each of us has unique features - lines drawn on the blueprint which make us a rare commodity. After all, out of the billions of people inhabiting this planet, there is only one of you.

That makes you rare.

A veritable one-hit wonder.

All adding up to a huge premium in the cost of acquisition...

Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Luke 12:24

Imagine this God, occupied with holding galaxies in place and managing nations, considering you and I valuable. Individually so, not just lumped in with everyone else. Counted. Known. Seen. Heard.

Deeply, heart-wrenchingly loved.

If our world truly knew the value of a human life, what would our world value?

Spotted, speckled, lined, plain - each of us is a rarity planted in God's global garden. A pursued, valued, beautiful addition to this rock we all call home.

I like that...
