Most of us are fully aware of the dangers of sun exposure. But consider this staggering statistic: 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers and 86 percent of melanomas are directly linked to UV exposure. What’s more, UV radiation is the primary cause of premature skin aging. While the blue skies and sunshine of the summer months beckons us all outside, it’s vital to protect our skin from the elements. Consider the following tips to help you do just that:
Stay Inside During the Sun's Rush Hours
The sun's rays are strongest when the sun is highest in the sky - generally around noon. If your plans involve enjoying the beach or getting into nature, aim to stay out of the sun between 10 am and 2 pm. Doing so will protect your skin while minimizing overall dehydration.
Apply Sunscreen Regularly
Regardless of your skin tone, sunscreen is essential when venturing outdoors. Look for one that offers broad-spectrum coverage to minimize risk from both UVA and UVB rays. Generally speaking, SPF 15 is a sufficient level of coverage, as it protects skin from approximately 93 percent of UVB radiation. SPF 30 protects from approximately 97 percent of UVB radiation but, beyond that, there is only a minor added benefit. For example, between SPF 30 and SPF 60, for example, there is only a .1 percent increase in protection. Sunscreen must be applied approximately 30 minutes before going outdoors to ensure skin is adequately protected. Additionally, it should be reapplied every two hours.
When the body first becomes hydrated it pulls moisture from non-vital areas, such as the skin, to protect the vital functions of the organs. Thus, preventing dehydration in the first place is essential. Carry bottled water with you at all times and take a sip every so often, even if you are not thirsty. Becoming thirsty is a sign that you need to rehydrate immediately and remove yourself from direct sunlight. Well-formulated moisturizers, like those from Lexli, also play an important role in protecting skin from dehydration. Featuring humectants, emollients and occlusive agents, these products help to prevent epidermal water loss.
Wear a Hat
It's certainly easy to be safe and stylish at the same time! The summer months are a great time to break out trendy, wide-brimmed hats. Using one will ensure complete coverage for your face while adding an elegant accessory to your look.
