The Holiday Season is upon us. It's that time of year where the post-Halloween binge on leftover candy snowballs into holiday-party gluttony, a heavy-handed pour on the eggnog and Facebook status updates regarding yearly resolutions. After all, as said by the wise Ms. Oprah Winfrey, "Cheers to new year and another chance for us to get it right." So, in that vein, and so that we may get an early start on our resolution to stop procrastinating, let's consider a few right-minded resolutions for 2017.
1. Be a Better Human Being
Paying it forward isn't some sort of pyramid scheme and the golden rule doesn't involve Xerxes from 300. However, it's never to late to start being a better person. Try out volunteering at a Food Bank or at the ASPCA. Plus, since studies show that volunteering is good for body and mind, you can help others and yourself at the same time.
2. Give Yourself Permission to Spend Time on How You Look
If you aren't totally certain about the being a better person thing, then you can at least look like a better person. When life is busy it's easy to skip flossing, go to sleep in makeup or wear the same pair of sweatpants for an obscenely long period of time. So, make 2017 the year that you start a new skin-care regimen, get enough sleep, or some other small step towards putting your best face forward.
3. See Your Doctor
Avoiding the doctor is understandable, but can end up carrying serious repercussions. Regular check-ups are a must. If you have any concerns that have been left unaddressed, or if you haven't had a cholesterol check since the [Bill] Clinton administration, find a doctor's office that agrees with you and make an appointment.
4. Quit Smoking
People don't like the smell. In the winter it involves standing outside in the cold. It is expensive. Your teeth turn yellow. It'll kill you. If you haven't stopped, 2017 is the perfect time to toss your cigarettes.
5. Meet New People
Making new friends and acquaintances is good for both your mental health and career. So, resolve to get out there, meet and get to know new, interesting people!
