Increasing prices are making it more difficult for families to sustain a healthy and cheap standard of living. While many opt for various coupons and discount offers to cut down on the cost of household goods, there are other effective ways of saving money without stepping foot into the winter cold!
One of the biggest ways to save money is to cut your electricity bill. The U.S Department of Energy reports that by turning down your thermostat between 10 and 15 degrees for about 8 hours can save you about 10% of your heating costs annually. Consider investing in a programmable thermostat. Smart systems can adjust the temperature when you are home and when you’re away based on your preferences.
Another way to slash the electricity bill is by using LED lights to make your home more efficient. While it might sound like a big initial investment, LEDs use half the electricity than regular incandescent lightbulbs. Plus they last not months, but years longer than regular bulbs.
Make your own beauty care products
Why pay for those expensive beauty and personal care items when you can make them yourself at home for a much lower cost. Make your own moisturizer cream by mixing lavender oil, coconut oil, and Vitamin E oil. Not only will your products be completely organic, but you’ll skip paying the organic price tag!
If you try making the lotion and love it (like I did) you can take on other projects like shampoo with cornstarch and essential oils or even challenge yourself with homemade soap!
Disconnect the cable
How much are you paying your cable provider a month? Have you considered switching to a streaming application like Netflix or Hulu? Or, you could cut the TV all together. It might sound like the end of the world at first and of course the kids may moan and groan, but eventually, you would enjoy spending more time with your family and nurturing your own hobbies.
With no cable TV at your disposal, you would not only bid goodbye to the cable bills, but will also develop a healthy habit of reading books, conquering puzzles, or even socializing in the evenings!
Start getting engaged in DIY projects
There is no better way to save money than to start fixing things on your own. Why pay hundreds of dollars to a repairman, when you can do the stuff yourself.
When your son’s favorite sweatshirt rips check out some YouTube Sewing videos to fix it yourself. Instead of jumping in the car, making a trip to the mall, and lugging the kids around the busy shops, you can relax in your favorite chair and admire your own handiwork.
Whether it is fixing the broken garage door or setting up the new electric line in the kid’s room, you can simply search the internet, go through the ‘How to’ articles and finish the job yourself. Your kids will find a new supermom in you.
There are many centers that offer classes on various DIY projects. Most home improvement stores (like Home Depot and Lowe’s) have weekend classes. Last month I learned how to install a sink all on my own! It saved me hundreds of dollars that I would have spent on a plumber.
Cook at home
It may be a sumptuous idea to get food from the local restaurant when you have guests coming over, but that will pinch your pockets too. Instead, consider switching to cooking at home and save some green. You’ll serve fresh and healthy food to your guests and family, which is more impressive than the store-bought stuff.
Avoiding harmful junk foods becomes easier when you get into the habit of cooking yourself. The kids will love it and you can involve them in the kitchen prep too. Soon you’ll be whipping up mouth-smacking delicacies together.
These tips will not only save you money, but will encourage you to learn new skills, eat healthier, and find new hobbies with your family. Not every tip works for everyone, but having an open mind and being flexible will help you find even more ways to save!
