The Pinnacle ListNew York City, “The Big Apple”, Gotham City, it’s not only the premiere melting pot of cultures in the world, the music scene of NYC encompasses EVERY genre of music.  Think about it…..Broadway, Punk Rock, the birth of Hip-Hop, singer/songwriters in the cafes, Disco, Jazz, Classical, even Salsa music credits New York City as their birthplace.   When you run the gamut from Billy Joel to The Ramones to Barbra Streisand To Jennifer Lopez and RUN-DMC, where do you begin?   Today’s we going to countdown the Top 10 “New York” Songs – to qualify the words “New York” must appear in the song title.   So a great tribute song to NYC like Jay-Z’s collaboration with Alicia Keys, “Empire State of Mind” wouldn’t qualify. But this illustrious list includes some of the biggest names in music history from the #1 superstar from the 1940’s to Taylor Swift!

Honorable Mention:  “New York” by U2, “I Love New York” by Madonna, “New York Town” by Rick James, and “New York, New York” by Ryan Adams

10. (TIE)  “NEW YORK”  –  The Sex Pistols and “NEW YORK” by Snow Patrol You can’t much different that the original Punk Rock band, Johnny Rotten and the Sex Pistols, compared to the softer style of Snow Patrol. Both songs deserve to be ranked higher but this list is just too powerful.

9.   “NEW YORK”  – Ja Rule, Fat Joe, and Jadakiss Got to have a Hip-Hop track on the countdown and Ja Rule nailed the hustle and bustle of the big city’s vibe with one of his signature songs.

8.  “ENGLISHMAN IN NEW YORK” – Sting You know you’ve got a great song when Reggae artists want to cover it and put their spin on it. Sting’s song was turned into “Jamaican In New York” by Shinedown on a tribute CD.

7.  “ALL THE CRITICS LOVE YOU IN NEW YORK” – Prince A funk jam on the keyboards from Prince’s landmark “1999” album.

6.  “NEW YORK MINUTE” – Don Henley Hard to imagine a Californian cracking the N.Y. countdown but you can’t deny Don Henley stripping away his Eagles-sound and capturing the energy of the Big Apple.

5. “WELCOME TO NEW YORK” – Taylor Swift and Ryan Adams If you’re not a Taylor Swift fan, then check out Ryan Adams cover version. If you’re looking to make your dreams come true, California and NYC have always been that dream destination.

4.  “FAIRYTALE IN NEW YORK” – The Pogues
Depending on your music history, you may want this one ranked much higher or off the countdown. A holiday classic that brings to mind the snowy winters and the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center.

3.  “BACK IN THE NEW YORK GROOVE” – Ace Frehley The former guitarist for KISS has the intensity and attitude of the stereotypical New Yorker. This high energy rocker has such an upbeat, bouncy groove that it’s the perfect driving song.

2.  “NEW YORK STATE OF MIND” – Billy Joel and Barbra Streisand Tough to not put this at #1 on the countdown. Can’t get much more iconic for New York than Billy Joel or Barbra Streisand. Each version of this song reminds us why New York City is so loved and cherished by many.

1.  “THEME FROM NEW YORK, NEW YORK” – Frank Sinatra and Liza Minnelli When they drop the ball on New Year’s Eve or when the Yankees win another World Series, what is the city’s go-to song to celebrate? It’s a little ironic that a Jersey boy like Frank Sinatra would be best known for the ultimate “New York” song.
